Georgian Turquoise and Pearl Blond Hair Mourning Brooch Pendant

$475

In the Georgian and Victorian eras, sentimental jewelry was extremely common, and used to demarcate important moments in one's life - weddings, births, and often, deaths. This piece is an exceptional artifact from this time period - a rare, exquisite and museum quality late Georgian brooch/pendant, featuring 25 turquoise stones on the outside and 20 shimmering pearls on the inner rim. This combination symbolizes love and friendship. The centerpiece of this brooch features light golden hair, finely woven and under glass, and the back is 14k gold. The lack of any engraving on this piece makes it impossible to determine if it is in fact a mourning piece or was commissioned as a sentimental piece for another occasion, but there is no doubt it was a custom made sentimental piece of jewelry.

It can be worn as a brooch or pendant - we've added a gold filled jump ring (which can be removed if you prefer to keep it as historic as possible). We have also restored this piece, replacing one pearl.

An absolutely gorgeous and truly special piece, rare for its age, condition, mix of stones, and the light hair color.

HISTORY: Late Georgian, 1830's

MATERIALS: Turquoise, pearls, glass, hair, 14k gold

SIZE: A dainty piece, measuring 13/16" east to west and 5/8" north to south. Each turquoise stone measures 2mm and the pearls 2.5mm. The centerplate measures 7/16" east to west by 5/16" north to south. The pin weighs 3.2 g.

CONDITION: Excellent. As noted, we did replace one pearl, as the original one was repaired poorly in the past.

A perfect piece for the collector, or even the vintage bride for "something old" and "something blue". *Please note that antique box is not included with purchase.
