H. Stern Sputnik Ring

Quite frankly, this is one of the most fabulous rings I've ever acquired for the shop! A cocktail ring at its best, with bright gold and 19 multi-hued natural stones forming a dome shape. These rings were created in the 1950's by H. Stern jewelry company, and became known as "Sputnik" rings given their resemblance to the Soviet satellite. Each piece of Sputnik jewelry is unique depending upon the combination and arrangement of the gemstones. This particular ring is a gorgeous combination of pinks and purples, with a hint of green and yellow.

The center stone, slightly bigger than the rest, is a deep purple bezel set amethyst, and it's surrounded by garnet, aquamarine, peridot, citrine and tourmaline. The shoulders of the ring are just slightly decorative with a hint of filagree. A number of Cartier's current and antique designs are also strikingly similar to this ring. It's a really beautiful, really fun piece.

HISTORY: 1950's; The H. Stern maker's marks are worn off.

MATERIALS: 18k yellow gold. Garnet, amethyst, tourmaline, citrine, peridot, aquamarine.

SIZE: Ring size 5 1/4, and weighs 3.96 grams. The center amethyst measures 4mm, and the rest of the stones all measure between 2.5 and 3 mm. The height/rise of the ring is approximately 1/2". The width of the dome is 11/16". It's quite the statement piece, but lightweight given that the bottom of the dome is hollow (see photos).

CONDITION: Great condition. The stones are all set strong and have very little wear. There is one small chip on one of the lower citrine stones, which is hardly noticeable. The band is on the thinner side but has many more years left in it - this was definitely a ring worn often and well loved!

A truly spectacular ring. *Please note vintage velvet box not included with purchase.
